“If you do not know…DO NOT TOUCH”
I have the good fortune of being very close with several people on chiropractic state boards and many of them have sat through my lectures on clinical excellence. The #1 comment I hear after the presentations is how pleased they are to hear me preach, “If you do not know, do not touch.” The #1 reason DC’s are losing their licenses nationally is because they treat aggressively without having a complete diagnosis. Too many DC’s adopt the policy of let’s start care and if you don’t respond we will consider MRI’s or other diagnostics tests. The MRI is usually the modality deferred in the chiropractic practice. One chiropractic board member went on to explain that if a doctor has a diagnostic dilemma, treats without a complete diagnosis and as a result hurts the patient, he will lose his license.
If there is a radiculopathy or a myelopathic component, what is the etiology? I know there is subluxation, but as I have repeated often, the practice of chiropractic must go beyond treating solely subluxation. We should not change it as our treatment priority, but we have to be aware of other factors that might delay our treating of subluxation or complicating factors that preclude us from treating subluxation. Treat first and look second is the surest way to ensure a strong future at Walmart!
