Preamble: Many of the issues I bring to you are very small, yet each issue is just that, an issue. If you take care of the small issues, then you will be able to build and more importantly, focus on the bigger issues...a larger practice and more family time.
I have been inundated with calls from doctors nationwide that have been successful in getting the lawyer to meet with them saying, “I can’t believe the first thing the lawyer did was to ask for my CV.” What I want to say every time is, “I told you so!” However, I take the high road (even though I don’t want to, I would rather gloat) and say, “That is why you need the credentials and we work so hard to get your CV perfect before they ask for it.”
Lawyers use your credentials as leverage in negotiations with third party payers to get a larger settlement. It’s about credentials; if you don’t have them, your CV is useless to the lawyer and they will look elsewhere for a doctor to work with their clients.
It is NOT about healing or nutrition or sports care or adjusting courses, because the lawyers DNGARA (do not give a rat’s ass…it’s late and I get to be sarcastic) about your abilities as a healer. The leverage they are seeking is not your abilities as a diagnostician; it’s about your credentials as a diagnostician, your credentials at triaging the injured, your credentials in neurology, orthopedics and anything related to caring for the injured. Formal courses taken in those subjects and in continuing education programs qualify as credentials.
You must bolster your CV with appropriate credentials. At the request of numerous doctors nationwide, I have created a CE course that can be accessed on the Web site. It is a good start, but not enough. I am holding a 9 credit CE course at the PI Bootcamp in Florida on March 1-2 as a response to a request for even more information. Other organizations and teaching intuitions also have great courses. It doesn’t matter from where or whom…just get the credentials.
You will be asked to produce your CV if you want to become successful in personal injury. This is about clinical excellence. Your credentials allow your clinical skills to be admitted in court. Without those credentials, your work will not be allowed to be heard or admitted into evidence. If you want to work with lawyers, give them a reason to work with you.
This is your competitive edge over other doctors in your community. By the way, this is our secret. Do not tell anyone…even to a friend in a state 1000 miles away. They might have a friend in your neighborhood and you will be creating your own competition.
Get the credentials…I have spent a career gathering credentials. Every credential on my CV has served a purpose to open a door. Start opening your own doors.
