Preamble: many of these issues are small, yet each issue is just that… an issue. If you take care of the small issues, then the larger issues often take care of themselves and you can focus on the larger issues… a larger, more profitable practice and more family time.

“Today is THANK YOU DAY”

Regardless of when you are reading this, at least once every 2 months, you need to set time aside to say, “Thank you,” to EVERYONE who has helped you get where you are. This includes, but is not limited to:

1.  Your wife, husband, significant other

2.  Parents

3.  Teachers

4.  Staff

5.  Patients

6.  Workpeople

There is not a person on the planet that did not have an inspiration or mentor or loved one who didn’t go out of their way for that person and this exercise is in humility. Love and appreciation is part of what keeps us all grounded, realizing that we are simply part of something bigger, that we have a direct ability to change.

It is easy to understand parents, teachers and loved ones, but staff is often who is forgotten in the chain of thankfulness and humility and a little appreciation goes a long way. I strongly suggest lunch on the office or movie tickets or something tangible, but it must come with a heartfelt VERBAL appreciation.

On the holidays, I always wrote a few paragraphs in a card telling my staff how much they meant to me. As a note, I had approximately 23 staff members and it took me days to write them all. However, most of my staff stayed with me for years, in part because of the perceived value I had in them based upon my verbal and written letters of thanks.

A little thank you, goes a long way towards your success, but more importantly, towards your happiness.

Respectfully,

Mark Studin DC, FASBE(C), DAAPM, DAAMLP
