Preamble: Many of the issues I bring to you are very small, yet each issue is just that, an issue. If you take care of the small issues, then you will be able to build and more importantly, focus on the bigger issues...a larger practice and more family time.

"Communication and Instant Needs"

What is one of the most profitable business sectors in the world? First, it was telecom and now it is both telecom and Internet communications. Just check the profit and loss sheets for Google, Verizon and AT&T.  This is such a commonly held belief that it now is considered a "truism" in our society when considering profitable companies.

 

There is a reason these companies are so profitable; they serve very important needs both socially and in business. Socially...ask any mother. They need to know where their children are at at any moment. Ask any teen; gossip is the core of their existence and texting is at the center of their lives...and on..and on...

 

In business, we have evolved into an "instant needs" culture. As an example, yesterday, I received a call from a lawyer in Buffalo. I am on the "call forwarding" feature for Dr. Owens as he is on vacation. The lawyer, who I luckily knew because he has heard me lecture many times, had a client in front of him that was in an accident and wanted to discuss the case with Dr. Owens. I explained that he was on vacation and the lawyer was intent on handling the case immediately as that has now become his business practice. I referred the lawyer to another doctor in the area who is in the program and the lawyer was pleased. If I had not, the lawyer would have gone right down his list of other doctors because our society and businesses have fully evolved into those of "right now." If...I was not available on the phone and had not handled the lawyers needs, the patient would have gone elsewhere. As a matter of business, you need to be continuously accessible to the legal community, your referrers.

 

I urge you to give out your personal cell number or get a dedicated cell/number to give to referral sources. Make sure that you have  e-mail access on your handheld and that you check your text messages frequently as you should encourage your referral sources to communicate  with you in "whatever format they are comfortable with," not what you are comfortable with. It doesn't matter if you are the best-of-the-best if they cannot communicate with you.

 

It always goes back to hitting the "EASTY BUTTON" for the referral sources. If you are not the easy button...someone else could be.
