I spoke to a contact, yesterday, who informed me that special investigative units (SIU) are continually on the prowl. However, it gets more ill than one would think. It appears that in the local FBI's white collar crime units, SIU agents from various carriers are given offices to maintain and feed the FBI information on whom to initiate investigations for possible criminal activity.
Think of how sick that is. The insurance company is directing the FBI as to who to investigate and feeding them statistics based upon what they want the FBI to see. I would like an office to direct the FBI to investigate carriers and their IME doctors to do the same, but we all know that is not happening.
Currently, in some states, it was reported that the SIU offices aren't busy enough. Therefore, the SIU agents stand the chance of losing their jobs, thus creating an urgency to find improprieties or fraud in your offices.
One prime area of scrutiny are your Web sites. They are being used to see what you are doing. In the past, I have warned you against predators, about listing personal information because predators also look for "rich doctors" to blackmail, etc. This is a new type of predator and they, too, are looking for your money.
Therefore, PLEASE review your Web sites and make sure that there is nothing that is either inflammatory or can be misconstrued by an aggressive carrier's investigative department looking to save their jobs at your expense. That includes affiliations, relationships, etc. that you have created that could possibly be considered inappropriate and give the carriers the right to institute an investigation or send their close friends, the FBI, after you.
It's always about the money. The FBI does not have the money and manpower to do the statistical research and the carriers want their money back from you. A marriage made in hell for the honest doctor who only wants to care for his/her patients!
