"Medical Specialist and the Brain - Chiropractic Research"
What do Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, dementia and cognitive disorders have to do with medical specialists or primary care providers referring spine cases to you? The answer is absolutely nothing…and everything.
The “absolutely nothing” centers around the fact that you will rarely, if ever, get a referral for Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, dementia and/or cognitive disorders. You will, however, get referrals for mechanical spine pain (no fracture, tumor or infection) and the reason you will get those referrals is because you will be smarter than every other spine care provider that those medical specialists will ever have have had a relationship with when it comes tomechanical spine pain. I have shared with you, previously, that a DC in Texas walked out of an orthopedic surgeon’s office with 8 referrals with the following comment from the orthopedist, “I love chiropractic, I just haven’t found a chiropractor that wasn’t stupid and you are now the first.” The results were not only an immeidate eight referrals, but a host of others that followed.
The “absolutely everything” comment above centers around the fact that you get to verify, based upon your knowledge base, that you are an “evidence-based practitioner” and your entire practice and how you function is consistent with the scientific literature. All of medicine is “wired through their entire academic and professional careers” to function in arenas that have been validated through the scientific literature with rare exception. Historically, chiropractic has had an upside down model because we’ve had very little scientific evidence and for over 100 years, we’ve been functioning on results without a verified scientific reason as to why we are doing so. This is the core of why medicine has not engaged chiropractic at a level that would be most beneficial to the public.
Although we do not have all the answers scientifically, we now have enough to start engaging medical specialists and the entire medical community as to why chiropractic works and, therefore, why the chiropractor should be the primary spine care provider. The caveat is that unless you, the chiropractor, becomes “well read” and has the literature at your fingertips so that you can both quote and produce it, you’ll be nothing more than perpetuating “the ol’ chiropractic one step two step BS paradigm.”
By attending seminars like we are having in Las Vegas coming up or in New York or Florida previously, you will learn more and more about the scientific literature and validation about chiropractic… AND HOW TO USE IT IN EVERYDAY PRACTICE. By going to the US Chiropractic Directory and reading articles such as “Chiropractic, Chronic Back Pain in Brain Shrinkage” (click here to access the article) or any of the 6 “brain function” articles listed on the left toolbar once you click “research” on the top toolbar, you will get started on your journey of understanding how chiropractic works in a contemporary scientific setting.
Please remember that this is just the start of your journey and the research is just starting to be published that will help you both understand what you do and verify to your referral sources that you are truly an expert and smarter than almost everyone else in the chiropractic field. The days of saying, “The bone is on a nerve,” has passed. Welcome to being part of “the best of the best through clinical excellence.”
